1 - 10 and Counting
So, your little person is ready to learn the numbers from 1 to 10. This is a really exciting time for you all and it’s important that you get it right. You see it’s not just a matter of memorizing the numbers 1 to 10 in the correct order. It takes an organised and measured approach.
Your child needs to understand what maths is all about and so needs to first be introduced to pre-number concepts. Just like we don’t throw them on a bicycle straight up, we gradually make the journey there – from tricycle, to balance bike to training wheels, the same is needed in learning math. It’s important to remember not to move forward until they’ve hit that lightbulb moment.

Firstly, let’s look at pre number concepts and what they are. They include:
Being able to identify and name numbers
Listening and practising to count
Classifying and categorising number groups
Sorting, sequencing and comparing numbers
Playing with number patterns
Matching by attributes
Measuring
Number value and worth
The use of specific terminology and vocabulary
What they need is a concrete measure, a hands-on understanding to apply, reason and ‘see’ math in day-to- day life. Don’t just ‘do math’, play with it, show how it is useful, practise it and have fun. There are so many opportunities around every day for you to use to practise and nurture number sense in your child. You can count your steps to the car, talk about why houses are numbered, why following a recipe is necessary, a phone number..... Show how numbers matter!
